Event Date: 23th March, 2026
Time: 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Venue: 207
Faculty Mentor:Dr. Shilpa Sardesai
The second session was delivered by Dr. Shilpa Sardesai on the topic “Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM).”
The session introduced SLAM as a fundamental technology in robotics and autonomous systems that enables a device to construct a map of an unknown environment while simultaneously determining its position within that environment. Dr. Sardesai explained how SLAM utilizes data from sensors such as cameras, LiDAR, radar, and ultrasonic sensors to identify features and landmarks in the surroundings. She further discussed how advanced algorithms process this sensor data to perform localization and mapping concurrently, while minimizing errors and recognizing previously visited locations to enhance accuracy.
The session highlighted the wide range of applications of SLAM in autonomous vehicles, mobile robots, drones, augmented reality systems, and robotic vacuum cleaners. It also emphasized the importance of SLAM in enabling machines to navigate safely and efficiently in unfamiliar environments without relying on pre-existing maps.
Overall, the session provided valuable insights into the role of SLAM in advancing intelligent and autonomous technologies.
