Speaker: Dr. Rajesh Kumar Dhanaraj, Professor, SICSR, Pune
Dr. Rajesh Kumar Dhanaraj delivered a research discussion session on “Prediction of Malnutrition in Kids by Integrating ResNet-50–Based Deep Learning Technique Using Facial Images.” The session addressed malnutrition as a critical public health challenge, particularly in resource-constrained regions.
The talk highlighted the limitations of traditional malnutrition assessment methods that rely on body mass index (BMI), manual measurement of height and weight, and dietary information reported by caregivers. Dr. Dhanaraj explained how facial image analysis using a ResNet-50–based deep learning model can help identify visible indicators of malnutrition-related conditions such as marasmus and kwashiorkor. Facial features like muscle loss, discoloration and fragility of hair, and changes in facial structure were discussed as potential markers. The session demonstrated how AI-driven approaches can support early detection and improve child healthcare outcomes.

Dr. Rajesh Kumar Dhanaraj, SICSR, Pune, presents on predicting child malnutrition using ResNet-50–based deep learning with facial images during the Forschung Series.
